Wide toe box sneakers give the toes room to lie flat instead of narrowing to a point. Many brands now make them, and they differ in how much sole sits under the foot, what the upper is made of, where the shoes are made and how long you have to return them. This article compares eight brands: Wyde Footwear, Be Lenka, Barebarics, Xero Shoes, Dolfie Paradise, Lems, Altra and Ohne Project. Wyde publishes this blog, so its shoes are one of the eight. The figures are the ones each brand publishes on its own website in October 2026.

What makes a sneaker a wide toe box sneaker?
A wide toe box sneaker has a front section shaped like a foot, so the toes can spread instead of being pressed together. Brands describe this in different words, but they all design around the same idea.
Three terms come up when you compare these shoes. A wide toe box is the roomy front section. Zero drop means the heel and the toes sit at the same height, like standing barefoot. Toe spring is the upward curve of the sole at the front of the shoe, which holds the toes slightly raised. Wyde has no toe spring on any model.
A wide toe box is not the same as a wide fit. Altra, for example, says a shoe with its FootShape fit is not a wide shoe. It is a shoe with a roomy toe box that still holds the foot securely through the midfoot.
How do the eight brands compare?
The biggest differences are sole thickness, materials and return windows. All eight brands design around a roomy toe box. The table shows one example model for each brand.
| Brand | Example model | Sole | Upper | Return window |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wyde Footwear | Nova Dual Black and Soma | Nova: 10 mm stack height plus insole. Soma: 22 mm | Nova: LWG Gold certified nubuck and grain leather. Soma: air mesh and suede | 30 days from delivery |
| Be Lenka | Icono | 5 mm rubber sole | Leather (nappa) | 14 days from delivery |
| Barebarics | Zing | 4 mm sole excluding lugs | Leather on the Zing in white leather | 14 days from receipt |
| Xero Shoes | Prio | 5.5 mm rubber sole with a removable 3 mm insole | Mesh | 45 days from delivery |
| Dolfie Paradise | MC5 V2 Black W | 6 mm natural rubber sole, with 6 mm and 2 mm insoles | Italian suede with leather details | 14 days from delivery |
| Lems | Primal Zen | 11.0 mm stack height | Microfiber and air mesh | 60 days on the US store, 30 days on the EU store |
| Altra | Torin 9 | 28 mm stack height | Mesh | 30-day trial runs |
| Ohne Project | Project 080 Heritage Black | TR sole with a 5 mm base | Corn waste and cotton | 14 days from receipt |
Brands measure soles in different ways. Some give the thickness of the outsole, others give the stack height, which is the total height of the sole between the foot and the ground. Use the numbers as a guide to how much sole each shoe has, not as an exact ranking.
Which brands have the thinnest soles?
Barebarics, Be Lenka, Ohne Project and Xero Shoes have the thinnest soles of the eight, from 4 mm to 5.5 mm. They suit people who want to feel the ground.
What soles do Barebarics, Be Lenka, Ohne Project and Xero Shoes use?
Barebarics says all its barefoot sneakers have zero drop and an ultra-flexible 4 mm sole, excluding lugs. Barebarics is a brand by Be Lenka. Be Lenka lists the sole of its Icono as a 5 mm rubber sole called EverydayComfort Neo, and the product page describes a wide toe box, a flexible sole and zero drop.
Ohne Project lists the Project 080 with an anatomic toebox, a TR light sole, a 5 mm base and a drop of 0 mm. Xero Shoes builds the Prio on 5.5 mm FeelTrue rubber, the same rubber as its Z-Trek sandal, with a removable 3 mm insole. Its product page describes a zero-drop heel and a foot-shaped toe box.
Xero Shoes also backs its FeelTrue soles with a 5,000 Mile Sole Warranty. Check the warranty page for the terms.
Which brands have more cushioning?
Altra and the Wyde Soma have the most sole under the foot, at 28 mm and 22 mm of stack height. Dolfie Paradise, the Wyde Nova and Lems sit in the middle.
What do Wyde, Lems and Dolfie Paradise offer in the middle?
Wyde describes its shoes as having more cushioning than ultra-minimalist barefoot shoes, made for everyday wear on concrete and pavement. The Nova Dual Black lists a stack height of 10 mm plus the insole. Wyde adds that the Nova looks as if it has a higher stack height, but that this is purely a visual effect. The Soma lists a stack height of 22 mm, an EVA midsole and a rubber outsole, and weighs 300 g in size 39. Every Wyde model has a wide toe box, zero drop, no toe spring and a removable insole.
Lems lists the Primal Zen with a stack height of 11.0 mm and zero drop. Lems describes it as having a wider outsole than the Primal 3 and a touch more cushion. The Primal Zen has a cork footbed, and Lems says you can remove the insole if you want more volume inside the shoe.
Dolfie Paradise gives you a choice. Its MC5 V2 has a 6 mm natural rubber zero drop sole and comes with two gel insoles. The 6 mm insole gives more cushioning and the 2 mm insole gives more feel of the ground. Dolfie notes that a thicker insole also reduces the space inside the shoe.
What does Altra offer?
Altra is a running footwear brand. Its Torin 9 lists a 0 mm drop, a 28 mm stack height, mid cushioning, a mesh upper, a Vibram XS DURA outsole and the Standard FootShape fit. Altra lists it as best for daily runs and walking.
Altra says that the heel-to-toe drop in all its shoes is always 0 mm or 4 mm. If zero drop matters to you, check the drop on each model. Altra also offers three FootShape fits: Original, Standard and Racing. Original is the roomiest.
Which brands make leather sneakers?
Wyde, Be Lenka, Barebarics and Dolfie Paradise all list leather or suede uppers on the models in this article. Xero Shoes, Lems and Altra list mesh and microfiber uppers on theirs. Ohne Project uses corn waste and cotton.
What are the uppers made of?
The Wyde Nova Dual Black has an upper of LWG Gold certified nubuck and grain leather, a Coolmax lining, cotton laces and a rubber outsole. The leather varies by colourway. Nova White, for example, has an LWG Silver certified aniline leather upper. The Soma has an upper of air mesh and suede with a velvet lining.
The Be Lenka Icono has a leather (nappa) upper with a textile and synthetic lining. The Barebarics Zing in white leather lists a leather upper and a textile lining. Dolfie Paradise makes the MC5 V2 Black W from Italian suede with leather details, and lists Leather Working Group certification for these materials.
Xero Shoes lists a mesh upper on the Prio, and its FAQ lists leather and suede models elsewhere in the range, such as the Prio Suede and the Glenn. Lems lists microfiber and air mesh on the Primal Zen and says the materials of that shoe, down to the laces and glue, are animal-free. Ohne Project says the Project 080 is handmade from corn waste and cotton, with a sole made from recycled rubber.
What does LWG certification mean?
LWG stands for Leather Working Group. Its audit is a comprehensive assessment of how a tannery measures, controls and reports the impact of its manufacturing operations, and the ratings run from Audited to Silver and Gold. The audit covers the tannery. It says nothing about the rest of the shoe, so check each brand's own information if other parts of production matter to you.
Which brand is widest by its own size guide?
Of the brands that publish a comparable chart, Wyde lists the widest figure in EU 42, at 11.2 cm. Be Lenka lists 10.8 cm for the Icono and Ohne Project lists 9.9 cm for the Project 080.
Wyde's size guide gives the insole width per size, from 10.0 cm in EU 36 to 12.2 cm in EU 47. Be Lenka's Icono chart gives the inner width of the shoe, from 9.5 cm in EU 36 to 11.8 cm in EU 47. Ohne Project's chart for the Project 080 runs from 8.9 cm in EU 36 to 10.8 cm in EU 47.
Each brand measures in its own way, and the charts are not built to be set side by side. Treat the figures as a guide and check the fit when the shoes arrive. Xero Shoes says all its men's shoes are wider than conventional men's shoes. Dolfie Paradise says its models have a wide, anatomical toe box but that the fit varies by model, so it publishes a size guide for each one.
For a closer look at width, read Wyde Footwear vs Be Lenka: Sole, Fit and Materials Compared or Wyde Footwear vs Ohne Project: Width, Sole and Materials Compared.
Where are the shoes made?
Wyde and Dolfie Paradise make their leather shoes in Portugal. Xero Shoes and Lems design in Colorado and manufacture in China. Be Lenka and Barebarics list Vietnam on the models in this article, and Ohne Project makes the Project 080 in Spain.
Wyde says its leather models come from three family-run factories in Portugal and that the Soma comes from a long-standing partner in China, chosen for expertise in suede and textile construction. Dolfie Paradise says each pair is handmade in small specialist workshops in Portugal.
Be Lenka says its shoes are manufactured in European workshops, such as in Portugal, and that it has expanded production to Vietnam. The Icono and the Barebarics Zing in white leather both list Made in Vietnam. Ohne Project says its sneakers are made in Elche, Spain. Xero Shoes says it designs all its shoes in Colorado and manufactures them in China. Lems says it designs in Boulder, Colorado and manufactures in a family-owned factory in China.
What do the shoes cost as of October 2026?
The example models cost between €110 and €215 or $130 and $160, depending on the brand and the store. Wyde's Nova Dual Black costs 2,375 kr or €215, and the Soma costs 1,875 kr or €179.

How do the return terms compare?
Lems gives the longest window at 60 days on its US store, followed by Xero Shoes at 45 days. Wyde gives 30 days. Be Lenka, Barebarics, Dolfie Paradise and Ohne Project give 14 days.
At Wyde, you have 30 days from the day you receive your order to register a return, and size exchanges are free in Sweden, the EU and the USA. For a refund, Wyde deducts €10 in the EU and 100 SEK in Sweden to cover the prepaid label and warehouse handling.
Xero Shoes accepts returns within 45 days of delivery on its EU store, for brand new, unworn and unaltered shoes, and deducts €7.50 from the refund if you use its return service. Lems asks you to try shoes on indoors on a carpeted surface. On its US store it deducts a $9 label fee from a refund, and its EU store gives 30 days from purchase with return labels at cost price.
Altra calls its offer 30-day trial runs. Be Lenka and Barebarics both give 14 days, and the customer pays the return shipping. Dolfie Paradise gives 14 days from delivery, and Ohne Project gives 14 days from receipt of the order.

How do you choose your size at each brand?
Measure both feet, then use each brand's own size guide. The brands ask for different allowances, so a size from one brand may not carry over to another.
Wyde asks you to measure from the back of your heel to the tip of your longest toe and to choose the size for your larger foot. The wide toe box is standard, so you choose by foot length only and do not size up for width. If you are between sizes, size up. Wyde sells full EU sizes from 36 to 47 and no half sizes. Its shoes may feel more spacious at first. For the Maia sandal, Wyde recommends sizing down one size from your Wyde sneaker size.
Lems says to choose a size with an insole at least 1 to 1½ cm longer than your foot, and to take the larger size if you are between two. Ohne Project asks you to add 0.8 to 1.2 cm to your foot length first. Dolfie Paradise recommends 0.5 to 1 cm of space between your foot and the insole, and it publishes a size guide for each model.
Xero Shoes says the Prio fits true to size and suggests your usual athletic shoe size. Be Lenka notes that its size charts are specific and may not match other brands.
Which brand suits which priority?
Choose by what you want from the shoe: how much sole, what material, where it is made and how long you have to test it at home.
What does each brand offer?
- Thinnest sole: Barebarics at 4 mm, then Be Lenka and Ohne Project at 5 mm.
- Middle ground: Dolfie Paradise at 6 mm with a choice of insoles, Wyde Nova at 10 mm plus insole, and Lems at 11.0 mm.
- Most sole under the foot: Wyde Soma at 22 mm and Altra Torin 9 at 28 mm.
- Leather sneaker handmade in Portugal: Wyde Nova or Dolfie Paradise MC5 V2.
- Longest return window: Lems at 60 days on the US store.
- Widest figure in EU 42: Wyde at 11.2 cm.
